The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Portsmouth is currently taking applications for bursaries to support full-time PhD study, starting in October 2011. Candidates may apply for study within any of our three major Research Centres:
The Centre for European & International Studies Research is the UK’s largest interdisciplinary centre for European Studies; achieving first place in Research Fortnight’s ranking of Research Power based on the RAE2008 results. Its areas of expertise include:
- European Studies, inc. European Politics and Public Policy, Europe’s relations with the Wider World, Transnational Europe
- French and Francophone Studies, inc. France and Africa
- History (Modern & Contemporary British & European) Modern Languages, Linguistics and Sociolinguistics

CEISR has an especially strong track record in supervising PhD projects in transnational and global history and politics including networks, transfer and European integration broadly speaking. Students interested in applying with a related project are invited to contact Professor Wolfram Kaiser , who leads the research cluster “Transnational Europe”, for an informal discussion of their project idea. University funding is for three years subject to satisfactory progress. Bursaries include payment of fees, a maintenance stipend (£13,590 in 2010-2011) and an allowance for fieldwork. The bursary agreement includes a requirement to undertake up to 6 hours teaching per week during each semester.
